Your independent physician for oncology

As an internationally recognized oncologist and one of the most scientifically cited physicians in the world, I have been successfully involved in the research and treatment of cancer for over 40 years. As a cancer expert, I want to give my patients the right to dignity, freedom from illness and self-confidence: through care, attention and science.

Clarification, diagnosis, consultation, therapy for all tumor diseases.

I offer clarification, diagnosis, consultation, and therapy planning for tumor diseases, both of the hematopoietic and lymphatic system (leukemias, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative syndromes as well as all Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas) and cancers of solid organs.

Many patients also have unclear symptoms that cannot initially be definitively linked to a malignant disease, such as fever of unknown origin, night sweats, unexplained and involuntary weight loss of greater severity, anaemia, reduction or increase in blood count cells, glandular swelling and other related symptoms. In many cases, there are also laboratory abnormalities such as elevated tumor markers whose significance remains uncertain. These symptoms necessitate further investigation into their underlying causes and appropriate treatment, if required.

“From day one, Cancer Expert Professor Greil and his team have given me with hope and confidence. I am from Linz and have been receiving treatment for bowel, liver and lung cancer for over 8 years. Even after all this time I am still full of confidence and deeply value the immeasurable dedication of one of the world’s leading cancer specialists. I can wholeheartedly recommend Prof. Richard Greil top marks, both personally and professionally.”

Introduction, treatment philosophy and procedure

You have the right to a second opinion and information.

About modern ways of treating cancer.

For patients with cancer, the uncertainty during the diagnostic process and concerns about what the diagnosis means for their own life and the lives of their partners and family members cause massive existential uncertainty and stress. It is often difficult to understand the multitude of treatment options and to find one’s bearings in a short space of time. This is particularly the case when many different forms of therapy, such as surgery, radiotherapy and drug therapy, are to be used in variying sequences.

Some people also feel that they have not understood everything discussed with their doctors, are in doubt and want to find confirmation that the chosen course of action is the right one.

Many patients, therefore, also wish a second opinion or more detailed information from a cancer expert about modern treatment methods, some of which are only available in clinical trials.

Obtaining a second opinion is not an attack on your primary treating physicians and it should not cause them disappointment if you chose to persue this option. It is a fundamental right of every patient, especially in an often life-threatening situation. It can bring clarity, a better understanding and acceptance of recommended therapies, or potentially inform about cutting-edge treatment methods based on the latest scientific knowledge.

SCRI-CCCIT

In fact, since 2004 I have built up the Salzburg Cancer Research Institute-Center for Clinical Cancer and Immunology Trials (SCRI-CCCIT), where I serve as a I am the scientific director. The institute conducts these studies at the III Medical University Clinic under a framework agreement with SALK. To date, more than 12,000 patients have participated in trials and clinical programs, addressing over 87 different types of cancer.

There are currently 90 clinical trials open – 56 of which are dedicated solely to the immunotherapy of cancer, lymphomas and leukemias. These include treatments with specific protein probes that deliver immune cells or special cell-killing substances directly to tumor cells to RNA vaccines against cancer, or reactivation of dysfunctional immune cells.

Participation in

clinical studies

Participation in clinical trials provides access to innovative drugs, that might otherwise not be available for several years.

As a cancer expert at the Salzburg Cancer Research Institute-Center for Clinical Cancer and Immunology Trials (SCRI-CCCIT), I have observed that patients gain access to effective medications significantly earlier in some cases, more than 5 years – compared to their official approval by European or American regulatory authorities. These treatments are neither commercially available nor accessible outside the framework of clinical trials.

Cancer Expert – Authorization

If you have imaging examinations such as CT, MRI, please bring the CD containing the images with you. To accelerate the availability of these findings and images, we recommend sending us written consent in advance that we can request examination results directly from institutes and hospitals.

You may also send us copies of these documents via e-mail to your appointment. In many cases, these examinations will only need to be arranged after the initial consultation. Furthermore, it can be beneficial to write down questions you would like to ask—either at home by yourself or with the assistance of a trusted person.

Please also complete the following form to authorize us to request examination results electronically from your doctors/hospital. After your appointment, we will discuss the next steps together.

After a detailed discussion and availability of all relevant findings we will jointly decide on the best course of action. You are welcome to bring an accompanying person with you to each appointment. This often makes sense, as four ears hear more than two and, under stress, there can often be uncertainty after the consultation as to what was really said or how to interpret what was said.
